Sedation
At Alexanders Dental Practice, we provide sedation services for nervous patients who feel they may need it, as well as during longer and more complex treatments.
What is sedation?
We can use sedation to help alleviate nerves and anxiety and to put you into a dream-like state. It is not a painkiller but instead works to put the patient into a state where you remain conscious, but unaware of what is happening. Some patients may even feel as though no time has passed at all.
What types of sedation do you use?
At Alexanders Dental Practice, we use oral, intravenous (IV) and inhalation sedation. After consultation during which we discuss your medical history, we’ll decide which sedation type is most appropriate for you.
Oral sedation is used as minimal sedation and is administered through a sedative tablet which you will take orally roughly an hour before your treatment. With oral sedation, you are left feeling sleepy and drowsy, but awake.
Intravenous sedation (IV) is administered intravenously, i.e. through a vein and gets to work more quickly than oral sedation. You will feel much more drowsy, and most patients do not even remember the treatment happening.
The third type is inhalation sedation, which is good if you don’t like needles. A small mask is placed over your nose and mouth, and you breathe in a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This gas mixture will make you feel calm during your dental appointment. You remain awake and aware while receiving the sedation, but you will experience a deep sensation of peace and relaxation while the team work on your teeth.
Our team of dentists and nurses are specially trained to deliver these types of sedation and will make sure that you are safe and comfortable at all times during your visit.
Life benefits:
Now you don’t have to let your fear of the dentist stop you from getting the dental treatment that you need.
A safe way to feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment.
Will I need someone to take me home?
Yes. Regardless of which type of sedation we use, you will need to be accompanied to your appointment and home again by a friend or family member. You should also avoid driving, drinking alcohol, and being solely responsible for small children for 24 hours afterwards.
